A Journey Through India’s Mountain Rail Heritage
This unique winter expedition brings together three of North India’s most celebrated mountain railways, offering an immersive experience into the golden age of narrow-gauge travel. From exclusive steam charters in the Eastern Himalayas to scenic valley railways beneath snow-capped peaks in Kangra Valley and the elegant colonial charm of Shimla, the journey blends railway heritage with cultural discovery.
Day-wise Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Siliguri
Upon arrival at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station, you will be transferred to your hotel in Siliguri. The rest of the day is at leisure, followed by an evening briefing about the tour.
Day 2 – Narrow Gauge Photography & Bengal Safari
The morning is dedicated to photographing the narrow-gauge railway as it runs through the streets and market areas of Siliguri. In the afternoon, you will visit Bengal Safari Park, where you can photograph wildlife including Bengal tigers, leopards, and Asiatic black bea
Day 3 – Steam Charter: Siliguri to Kurseong + Night Photography & Workshop
Today features an extended steam charter beginning from Siliguri and covering the classic mountain sections via Tindharia. The day includes multiple planned run-bys and photography stops, along with a visit to the historic Tindharia Railway Workshop and shed.
As the evening sets in, the charter continues into a specially planned night photography session, offering a rare opportunity to capture steam operations under dramatic lighting conditions, with controlled run-bys designed for night shooting.
Day 4 – Steam Charter: Kurseong to Darjeeling
The charter continues further into the hills, covering some of the most iconic sections of the route including Tung, Sonada, Ghum—the highest railway station in India—and the famous Batasia Loop before arriving in Darjeeling.
Day 5 – Darjeeling Exploration
A relaxed day for leisure and exploration. Guests may opt for a steam joy ride, visit tea gardens, or explore Darjeeling town for photography.
Day 6 – Darjeeling Leisure Day
An additional full day in Darjeeling allows for deeper exploration, relaxed photography, or optional activities. This flexibility ensures guests can fully enjoy the destination at their own pace.
Day 7 – Departure
After breakfast, transfer to Bagdogra Airport for your onward journey.
