The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is more than just a train line. It is a moving piece of history, a marvel of engineering, and a photographer’s dream. From May 24th to May 29th, we had the privilege of hosting a photography tour along this iconic 78-kilometer route. Participants from the UK, France, and America joined us to capture the charm of the over 140-year-old railway as it carried goods wagons uphill through the stunning landscapes of Darjeeling. The journey was led by the legendary engine whistle queen, which guided us all the way to Darjeeling. This post shares the highlights and unforgettable moments from the tour.
The Historic Charm of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
The DHR, often called the "Toy Train," was built in the late 19th century and remains one of the most remarkable narrow-gauge railways in the world. Its heritage status and unique engineering make it a fascinating subject for photographers. The railway climbs steep gradients, winds through lush hills, and crosses numerous bridges and tunnels, offering endless opportunities for striking images.
Our group witnessed the railway in action, focusing on the goods wagons slowly making their way uphill. The contrast between the old steam engine and the natural surroundings created a timeless scene. The rhythmic chug of the engine and the sharp whistle of the queen added to the atmosphere, making every shot feel alive.
Capturing the Journey: Key Photography Moments
Early Morning Light and Mist
The best light for photography came early in the morning when the mist still clung to the hills. The soft, diffused light highlighted the contours of the landscape and the train’s steam, creating a magical effect. Photographers positioned themselves at vantage points along the track to capture the train emerging from the fog.
The Engine Whistle Queen in Action

The star of the tour was undoubtedly the engine whistle queen. This steam locomotive, with its distinctive whistle, pulled the goods wagons steadily uphill. Close-up shots of the engine’s wheels and pistons in motion revealed the mechanical beauty of this historic machine. The contrast between the black engine and the green hills made for dramatic images.
Scenic Views Along the 78 KM Route
The railway passes through several picturesque spots, including tea gardens, small villages, and dense forests. Photographers captured wide-angle views of the train snaking through the hills, framed by terraced fields and blooming rhododendrons. The changing scenery kept the group engaged and inspired throughout the tour.

Techniques and Tips Shared During the Tour
Our experienced guides shared practical advice to help participants get the most from their cameras and the unique conditions of the railway:
Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the train, especially when capturing the moving wheels and steam.
Shoot during golden hours (early morning and late afternoon) for warm, soft light that enhances textures and colors.
Experiment with angles by shooting from low points near the tracks or high viewpoints overlooking the railway.
Include elements of the landscape to provide context and tell a story with each image.
Be patient and ready to capture unexpected moments, such as the train passing through tunnels or crossing bridges.
These tips helped photographers of all skill levels improve their shots and develop a deeper appreciation for the railway’s visual appeal.
Cultural and Historical Insights Along the Way
Beyond photography, the tour offered a chance to learn about the railway’s history and its role in the local community. The DHR was built to connect remote hill towns and facilitate trade, especially tea exports. Seeing the goods wagons in action reminded us of the railway’s ongoing importance.
Participants also interacted with local residents and railway workers, gaining insight into daily life around the tracks. This added a human dimension to the images and enriched the overall experience.
Final Reflections on the Tour Experience
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway photography tour was a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The combination of the steam engine’s charm, the challenging terrain, and the vibrant surroundings made every moment worth capturing. Photographers returned home with not only stunning images but also stories of a journey through time.
For anyone interested in railway history, steam engines, or landscape photography, this tour offers an unmatched opportunity. The DHR continues to inspire and connect people across continents, just as it did during our memorable week in May.
